MALARAZZA

MALARAZZA

2013
Rosarno, Italy

300 x 600 cm
intervention on billboard

This work, inspired by a traditional song from South Italy, talks about servants that are beaten up and mistreated by arrogant masters and cruel recruiters of day laborers. In the song, the servant ask justice to God, but he answer that she must make justice by herself, showing her teeth and fighting, because nobody will fight for her.

ACQUA FARINA E POMODORO

WATER FLOUR AND TOMATO

2013
Torino, Italy
in collaboration with GEC

intervention on light billboard
300 x 400 cm
materials: water, flour, tomato

HD video
5:05 min

color, sound
filmed and edited by the artists

A fast action in which the two artists, disguised as advertising company employees, simulate to clean the glass of a big light billboard, but they make it dirty with a mixture of water, flour and tomato.
The aim is to obscure the commercial advertising. In this way, the billboard looks opaque and lose his function. The action intend to reflect upon the relation between advertisement and urban landscape.

MONO TONO

MONO TONO

2013
Realized in Torino, Italy

43 x 28 x 29 cm
materials: megaphone, barbed wire

The megaphone acts as a symbol of the right of free speech while the barbed wire
acts as a barrier to keep something unwanted out, therefore, this sculpture directly
alludes to the suffocation of this right by a totalitarian government.

CENTRIFUGA ABUSIVA

Rosarno, in the province of Reggio Calabria, is known for the intensive cultivation of oranges and for the mistreatment of thousands of immigrants from Africa. These workers live mainly in unhealthy places and decaying houses. The action performed by the artists intends to liberate simbolically these people from the waste in which they are forced to live, denouncing the proliferation of illegal dumps and the lacking activation of a valid process of reuse.

Questi lavoratori vivono in prevalenza in luoghi insalubri e dimore fatiscenti.

A LESSON IN DEMOCRACY

UNA LEZIONE DI DEMOCRAZIA

2013
Cambridge, USA

performance
photo: Diane Pontius

Observing the recent history of the United States of America, it seems a dilemma to find a point of synthesis between the imperialist soul and the democratic one, characterized by a profound defense of fundamental liberties. On one hand wars, on the other hand the university of Harvard, home of American free thought. The performance wants to highlights this contradiction and it represents a girl from Kabul arriving at Harvard to follow lessons in international law, after she gained an aid grant for a cultural exchange Boston – Kabul. Such a long trip to understand what is hidden behind the American supremacy and the war of attrition in Afghanistan and the Middle East. However, a lot of doubts remain about the treatment that Americans will reserve for this young student. Judging by the look of the first person she meets – a veteran from the U.S. Army – hard times are going to come…

UNDER THE ADVERTISEMENT THERE IS THE ART

June 2013
Torino, Italy

intervention on billboard
300 x 600 cm

Sometimes it happens that some minute after an unauthorized billboard intervention, advertising operators arrive and don't care about anything: they just paste up their new advertising campaign and then they move to the next billboard. This is a small action of resistance against advertising public space occupation, that consists of removing the new advertising in order to reveal the art.

SOLIDE FONDAMENTA

SOLID FOUNDATIONS

2013
Bovalino, Italy

240 x 120 x 60 cm
materials: wheelbarrow, bricks

Realized through the combination of tools and materials typical of building construction, the artwork intend to reflect upon the unstoppable process of systematic expulsion of Palestinians from their lands and the confiscation of the land by the Israeli government. The unstable balance of bricks, ready to fall down the ground, refer to the demolition of thousands of Palestinian houses. The wheelbarrow, on the other hand, points out the struggle and difficulty of those who don’t give up, and proudly removes debris and build new foundations.

SERVICIO MEDICO

SERVICIO MEDICO PARA INMIGRANTES SIN PAPELES

February 2013
Madrid, Spain

unhautorized intervention with painted cardbox
materials: cardbox, paper, acrilyc, tape, nails

European countries are becoming multicultural societies, and national health systems have progressively adapted following their political and historical peculiarities. Overall, sick, immigrants with regularised administrative status are able to use health services in equal terms than people from the host country. Legal immigrants have a poorer health status and worse living conditions than the host population, and consequently, may even have a higher utilisation of health services, although that is not always the case. Illegal immigrants are, in principle, not entitled to receive medical care from public services, except in cases of emergencies, but it is unclear where and how they receive medical care in cases of need. In some countries “alternative health care providers” such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) offer medical care, often supported with public funds. But again, we do not know whether those alternative health care providers are used when they exist, and to what extent they are preferred to other providers. Some Spanish doctors and regions say they will defy a ban on free healthcare for an estimated 150,000 undocumented immigrants, imposed by the central government as part of spending cuts to avoid an international bailout. Five of Spain's 17 autonomous regions - including Catalonia and Andalucia which provide more than one-third of national economic output and are not governed by the central government's ruling People's Party - would continue to treat immigrants who have no papers. The new law is not ethical, it's not cost efficient, and it makes no sense for the public health system. It's based on myths that immigrants are abusing the system that are not true, and the nearly 6 million documented immigrants in Spain, most of them legal residents, account for only 5% of the country's healthcare cost.
